During the civil and landscaping work currently underway at The Parks Red Hill we have identified during some redundant asbestos infrastructure, such as in-ground pipes and pits, and asbestos materials within the existing topsoil.
Importantly, the asbestos materials identified on site are non-friable (bonded) and do not present an exposure risk unless it is significantly disturbed. Accordingly, the exposure risk from non-friable (bonded) asbestos material is considered to be negligible. This is supported by the results of the airborne fibre monitoring that has been undertaken on the site.
Asbestos was a common building material in older residential sites and its removal is not an uncommon activity for urban renewal sites like The Parks Red Hill. From review of prior records, an asbestos removal notification was issued to surrounding residents by the ACT Government during the demolition of the pre-existing buildings onsite.
In accordance with statutory requirements, the contractor, BMD Urban, has notified WorkSafe ACT and engaged a specialist hygienist consultant (who is an ACT licensed asbestos assessor) to undertake further site investigations and to update the site remediation plan, if required. BMD Urban will also be engaging an ACT licensed asbestos removalist and asbestos assessor to remove the asbestos materials found.
Appropriate clearance certificates will be obtained from the asbestos assessor following removal of the materials.
As part of the asbestos removal process, you may observe asbestos warning signs, air monitoring equipment and workers wearing protective equipment. This is all part of ensuring that the asbestos materials are properly contained and removed safely and is considered best practice.
We take matters concerning health and safety very seriously and we are committed to providing a safe and healthy environment for the site workers and the surrounding Red Hill community.
We will provide you with a further update once investigations are completed, remediation plans are finalised and before commencement of any required remediation works.
In the meantime, work will continue on unaffected areas of the site.
