An independent third-party safety review into pedestrian and traffic safety within the precinct has recommended the temporary closure of Lady Nelson Park.
We understand this may be an inconvenience to some but the safety of residents, pedestrians and the broader community is our paramount concern.
As construction is now active across the majority of the blocks including apartments (DOMA), townhomes (Stockland) and individual owner blocks (25 different builders), the small and large vehicle movements within the precinct have significantly increased. This increases the potential safety risks for vehicles and pedestrians accessing the park.
The safety review, which was done in conjunction with the ACT Government, also highlighted the need to ensure safe egress into and out of the park in case of emergency. This egress is not currently available as there is only one mode of entry/exit due to the temporary road closures around the park.
For these reasons, and to ensure the safety of the community, the park will be closed to the public from Friday 26 November 2021.
An alternative recreation area is located adjacent to Red Hill Primary School on the corner of La Perouse Street and Monaro Crescent or at the Golden Grove and Carnegie Crescent central community play spaces.
Subject to a further independent safety review, we will endeavour to re-open the central park once the townhomes to the east of apartment block are complete and safe pedestrian footpaths can be provided to the park. Currently, we anticipate this to be early in the second quarter of 2022. We will also need endorsement from the ACT Government to reopen the park.
We will provide updates as they become available on this website.
We apologise for any inconvenience however the safety of the community is our primary concern.
Thank you for your ongoing patience and cooperation.
